I misunderstood. I thought you had planted them outdoors,in the ground. I think I'd be for contacting Swan Island.

Today, I finished planting my stored dahlia tubers. I had carefully labeled them with duct tape on the stem. Some lost their stem, so it's a crap shoot what I have planted in the new raised dahlia bed. Some of them had new stem growth of six inches or so...they were ready to be planted. If these grow and flower, I need to do better next year.
I still have some small tubers that are not identified, so I think I'll plant them in a big pot and see if I can propagate some new ones. Or at least figure out who is who.

DSCF0358 by BLou, on Flickr DSCF0365 by BLou, on Flickr DSCF0353 by BLou, on Flickr The yellow dahlia is a purchase from Swan Island...the name is Polventon Supreme. I grew it last year and did not get bloom. When I dug it in the fall, I found new tubers and the original tuber was all black inside. I guess all is okay because it is blooming nicely this year. The small red dahlia is a seedling that I grew last year. It produced tubers and this is what is flowering now. it does not have a name. The larger coral dahlia is a purchase from Swan Island. The name of it is Tempest. I grew it last year and this is from saved tubers. I may be addicted to dahlias.

This is Mingus Phillip, Sr. I grew this last year also. It has the potential to be an eleven inch bloom...this one measures seven and a half inches wide, but it is not fully open, even though it looks a little tired and chewed. DSCF0440 by BLou, on Flickr This second one is a no name purchased at the greenhouse this spring. It was a cheap tuber, but has produced lots of bloom. I'm hoping it produces tubers also. It is about 6 1/2 inches wide, but will probably get a little bigger as it opens more. DSCF0439 by BLou, on Flickr

Looking at my pictures, I realize that the color of the second one is really inaccurate. The color is more of a deep rich purple...not the rosy purple that I see.

lilolpeapicker, Are you over wintering any tubers? I follow the Facebook page of a grower who sells the flowers and tubers. He shared a pic of his tubers...covered in mold. He's anticipating pretty much a total loss. So, if you are storing some, better check them...and I'll be doing the same, along with checking the temp of the mix they are stored in.

If you remember, my dahlias failed to grow last season. I did start some from seed but I have more seed so I didn't try to save them from last year. I ordered 6 tubers from Swan Island this year as well.

Duh...remember? Totally forgot that you didn't have any tubers to save. No worries, then.

Dahlias are truly wonderful! They were Bill's favorite flower. I have several in my front borders that I have NEVER taken up to overwinter. They still show up every year. Some of the ones from seed are fun to grow too. Your pictures are lovely binnylou,. Theresa

Thank you. I have most of my flower pictures in a digital frame, and if I remember to look at it once in a while, I see my flower friends.

I ordered 6 tubers from Swan Island this year as well. How are your dahlias doing, lilolpeapicker? The ones that I overwintered are still in storage, but starting to grow. I checked them yesterday, and they seemed to store just fine...now I need to separate the new tubers. And get them in the ground.

lilolpeapicker, did you plant your new tubers? My new ones are planted...but I'm not bragging yet. And I probably won't be bragging about the ones from last year either. Operator errorπ€
