brown, according to swan island dahlias, when you live in climate that freezes you dig them up, store and replant. I imagaine, knowing you the way I do, if you mulch enough, some would make it, depending on the severity of the winter... I did not dig mine here when I had them I did in so. calif. and they turned into raisins...

if you mulch enough, some would make it, depending on the severity of the winter... I already pulled them up. I wasn't expecting to see tubers so it was a surprise. Thanks binnylou for the advice to check Swan Island. I did that and found out about the "eyes" needed for each tuber. If I had not checked that I would have just pulled off the tubers. I think that I will bring the entire plants into the garage for the winter and divide them in the spring. I actually saw a couple of those little "eyes". I never knew about them before.

lilolpeapicker....have you harvested your dahlia tubers? If so, I was just wondering what you thought of the crop of tubers that your plant produced.

I have some of them. Today I will finish up. Where I have tubers, I cannot tell where the eyes are. I have not separated them but I did bag them up to take to my sister's basement as mine is just a crawl space and they would freeze in the garage. Since this is my first year, I don't know what to expect but it was nice to see new tubers. Learning as I go.

I'm still agonizing on how to store them...do I wrap each tuber in plastic....put the whole clump in a box of peat....I was going to use cedar pet bedding, since I have some and don't have a pet that uses that stuff. I have read so many opinions on the FB Dahlia site, I'm truly confused. Yes, it's difficult finding the eyes on some of the tubers...others are quite obvious.
One of my Swan Island tubers did not bloom...it grew good foliage...I think it may have set a small bud, but never got a bloom to prove that I got what I bought. When I dug it, the bottom was totally rotted away, but it did produce some tubers.
All but one variety have been out of the ground for several days, so I'd best be deciding my storage method. If it's wrong, I know where they sell more tubers. I've found some FB pages of growers...one in Michigan...and these folks are selling also on the net. Come on Spring.

....put the whole clump in a box of peat....I was going to use cedar pet bedding, Either way should be good. Check them every month to make sure they are not drying up. A grocery bag, with potting soil or pet bedding will work too as long as you don't close the bag up tight. I am letting mine in the big pots. I brought them in yesterday. They are pretty dry. One clump, from a small pot, I threw the clump of tubers in on top of my bag of potting soil, that I have open in the basement for playing with. It's a big bag. When I need soil out of the bag, I just pull the clump out, dig around, and then throw the clump back in. In February start potting up early, so that you can set them out and get a head start.

binnylou , This is the clump that I am storing in the potting soil bag, and the others are in the pots I grew them in all spring, summer and fall. The weather is on all the channels here for the 11 o'clock news and all the weather gals are getting ready to have babies! hhahaha reuben , have ya noticed all our weather gals are getting ready to be mom's? I find it amazing just how many weather gals are getting ready to pop. I must count back 8to 9 months ago and see what was happened.

I'm going to pot up my favorite tuber this morning. I've had it sitting in the potting soil bag. I see that it has a baby shoot on it. If your tubers have some skinny shoots on them, I would break them off before planting. The BIG pots are still in the shed and I'm not bringing them out yet. They have the other dahlia tubers in. I didn't dig them out of the pots. I left them be.

My Dahlia is blooming but the pots I dragged out of the shed have not started sprouting. You can see the pots in the background.

I purchased 4 dahlia tubers from Swan Island and not one sprouted. They were planted 3/19 so it has been 33 days. So after digging them up there is no growth on any of them. I am frustrated.

Is your soil warm enough for dahlias? Mine are still in storage...probably should have them out and potted, but I've been "lazy". We went to town to get some of the potting soil that was on sale at 10/10, yesterday and today only. When we got there, it was sold out. Came home with a rain check, but that doesn't help me for getting the new dahlia raised bed filled and ready for planting.

My house is 65 but they sprouted last year. And those started by seed are doing great!! But I am guessing it is conditions here rather than something wrong with the tubers. But 2 of them were on heat. Everything was all the same as last year when 1 out of 10 didn't make it and Swan Island replaced that one and that one did well.
