Ok, so where Hazel goes, not much grows. My "Wall of Tomatoes" raised planter area suffered the most this past season from her exploring and frankly, adjustment period. Working with a trainer on behavior, routine, etc. She seems to leave the more durable/woody plants alone so I was thinking of taking the same space and setting a high horizontal grape arbor. Setting the posts and cables is easy enough. Question for you folks is should I simply mulch under the vines or plant? Leaning toward herbs like savory, sage, and lavender at the moment. Maybe root crops? Anyway, I always appreciate input from all y'all. ;)

all i know, is that vinyards mulch with red clover - maybe for the bees? -- not that I would suggest this in your situation.
your plan sound like a perfectly good plan.

I have grown ginseng and skullcap under grape...
I would have tried golden seal if I had thought of it.

Think I'll stick with root crops.

Hi Latitude,
There is a current blog on our county blogspot that is about pruning and caring for grapes and it has some good tips. If you google Jeffco Gardener Blogspot it will take you to this site and you will see this blog. It has some good tips.
