Well I started the day with four goals in mind: pull chiogga and Albino beets, remove the DeGrace snow pea vines, empty kiddo's pool of rainwater and seed squash and cucumbers. Remarkably all four are completed. Kiddo has an ENT appointment at the university hospital early tomorrow and mom and I are planning to tackle the beets after we get back. Amazingly those little 4' rows produced a total of almost 15 pounds of beets. I did pull a few Detroit dark reds from the other bed, but the beets there don't seem to be doing much. Aiming to keep it watered with some compost tea in hopes they produce something. Shelled out the snow pea pods I'd brought in to dry a few weeks ago and have plenty of seed now in addition to the pods I brought in today. I know I'm cutting it close on a couple of varieties but went ahead and sowed winter squash, pumpkins and watermelon in 4-packs too. I've had too much trouble with slugs and birds getting the direct-sown seedlings and am growing everything as transplants. That will give me time to get the new bed finished and put down a layer of compost for the stuff going in the old garden. Hoping to plant the winter squash in the corn bed, which is doing well. One rain barrel is completely full and working on filling the second one.

Had a decent rain yesterday, started in at 0700 and lasted til past 1000. Just over an inch. Then the humidity came along with sunshine, it was the worst day for that so far. Today is going to be even worse. It's 79* now at 0400! Instant sauna when I let The Princess out. I doubt we will walk this morning. :
Wandered through the garden in the afternoon, picked a few peas. Princess and I ate them right there. The garlic looks ready to dig, but definitely not today with the heat. Spent the day reading and doing laundry. Kind of exhausted from the weekend! My poor hydrangea is getting sun burned. I will try to make a shade cover of some sort for it. Next year I'll move it to a less "hot" space near daylilies where it can get some protection. I would never have one, except Sis bought it for me. It's a smallish variety.
I might make a trip to my fave quilt shop in Conrad, about 14 miles away. Time to get Winter projects planned.

Lounging around and nibbling on leftovers was the biggest part of the day yesterday. We did get moving late afternoon and put the tables and chairs away. We took Josie for her loved ride on the gator. I then decided to water the garden as the predicted rains must had fizzled out in Iowa. Just before dark we gatored to a close friends of sweetheart’s to watch the local fireworks display. Neither the car or truck left the driveway yesterday which is a rarity. It was a very good day…..

Managed .75 mile walk. Enough for The Princess. Picked bush beans. Cut all the kale and froze it. Amazingly no bugs in it. Now too hot to spend more than 5 minutes outside. Made a shade cover for hydrangea with fence, old sheet and secured with clothespins. Noticed some blossom drop on peppers due to heat.
Will go out after 4 and cut dill for drying.
UPDATE: Not going to cut dill, too blasted hot! Heat index 109 at 4 pm.

Started working on removing the gazillion siberian elm seed sprouts. It's going to take weeks, even with a hoe; some have to be taken out by hand. And you have to get them when they are tiny because their roots go deep, quickly.

We just did a very brief grocery shop for a few things that were on sale that were going to expire end of today. Then a very welcome rain (too brief) kept us inside for puttering.

No gardening today except for watering this evening. Today, I performed manual labor, as in having a job, and helped the kid on a project where having two people resulted in three times the work being done. I am going again tomorrow and then he's back on his own after that with one more day to finish. We are installing infrastructure for the Whirlpool Jet Boat tour company up on the Niagara River. It's an exciting place and we can ride the boats for free when they are doing check rides if we want but so far no time for it. They are quite safe but something in my head doesn't agree with me being anywhere near Class 6 rapids. whirlpooljet.com/

Took kiddo to ENT appointment and I'm not very impressed with this doctor. Everything was set up at the other hospital and this one wants to add more testing and the likelihood of getting her scheduled for surgery before December isn't likely. Of course by then she'll be back in school and in the middle of cold and flu season and for some reason I have a weird feeling of deja vu.
I had to pick up some groceries and picked up some shrimp and veggies for a stir-fry lunch. Once back at my parent's, we ate and immediately started working on the beets. I have to say I'm in love with the Albino beets! They are so sweet and mom was even impressed with the flavor.

I'm not very impressed with this doctor. Are there other ENTs you can check out? My hub and I went through 3 cardiologists last year before we finally found one for him that we trust enough to see again when it's time for a check in. There are some real duds who have a MD behind their names.

I took down my hydroponics today, and harvested the last chard I had growing. I drained them, took them outside, and hosed everything off and cleaned most of it, until it started raining on me! I was already soaked, from the horrible humidity, so I just watched for the lighting, and fortunately, there wasn't any. I did little in the garden today, but I did pick a couple more tomatoes, and the first bitter melon.

There are some real duds who have a MD behind their names. Working on it. I'm hoping to speak with the first ENT and get her insight on yesterday's diagnosis. Then I'll probably call and see if another ENT is available at the university hospital since evidently no other hospital will do her surgery. I'm just getting tired of the 185+ mile trips and kiddo is getting tired of being poked and prodded just about every week.

Yesterday started out with me getting the usual morning chores done then dragging the hose around the yard watering flowers. When mom was here Sunday she advised me on trimming roses so I put my new knowledge to use. It was getting quite warm but I was feeling pretty frisky so I put on my big straw hat and headphones and mowed one of the pastures. That pretty well took the wind out of my sails so I spent some time in my easy chair. Later on I did perk up enough to mow around the garden area. To end the day sweetheart, Josie and I went on a gator ride around town. It was a hot but very good day…….

We did 2 mile walk this morning, pretty humid and cloudy but cooler. Anything is cooler than yesterday! Then had to make a trip to the big city. Got a lot accomplished. Came home and attacked the garlic. In spite of the 1" rain the other day, the ground was not saturated. It was moist down in there, but the dirt fell off easily. It was easy enough, but I was sweating like crazy. All spread out on newspapers in the garage. Tomorrow I'll bundle and hang them. Planted 8 broccoli seedlings in part of the vacated space. The crookneck I planted the other day is already coming up, it will take up the remainder of the garlic bed. And the row of beans planted 3 days ago is poking up already too.
Picked some broccoli shoots from the early broccoli, never did make large heads. I give up on early broccoli. Still have 8 broccoli seedlings to put in somewhere. Cukes are finally starting to vine out. That took forever!
