binnylou, desertwoman, emmsmommy, I can sympathize. Anything under 60 degrees is getting uncomfortable to me. Everybody else in my household always seem to want to be cooler, even in winter. breezygardener, that is a beautiful pup!

Friday I took the neighbor to UHIC for the eye fungus problem. Thankfully for him it’s just about cleared up with no damage to the cornea. Friday night we had a rain shower so there was no field work Saturday. I did get the yard mowed, haircut and chicken chili made for sweetheart. Our new refrigerator and dishwasher are scheduled to be delivered today, won’t sweetheart be excited when she gets home from work!

Busy couple of days. Cleaned house Friday, The Princess got a bath, then went to visit Mrs. J at assisted living. Helped her defrost her little fridge freezer since we couldn't go outside due to rain. Took her some peach cobbler which was her husband's favorite dessert. So we ate that and reminisced about him. A good visit. Yesterday I went to Dad's. Brother had in mind that I do some house cleaning, so I did the living room and dining room while he was went to get fuel for garden tractor, skid loader and log splitter. By noon, Dad decided it was time to go out and dig those sweet taters. Brother and I were stacking wood in the basement. Brother went to the lower lot to get another load while I continued stacking. The wood room is 8 x 10 and is now nearly full to the rafters. Then went out to see how the sweet potato digging was going. Dad seemed content to have just him and step mom working on it. So I got the ladder from the orchard, about a block down the lane, gathered up some 5 gallon buckets and proceeded to pick Asian pears. Got nearly 5 buckets full. Done. Told Dad there were still some on the trees and that I'm not paid enough to go above the 3rd step on the ladder! He laughed. The tater digging was slow going, asked if I should get another fork, he said no. Brother brought one anyway and it wasn't long before Dad said to dig on my side of the row. 2 hours later we had that 80 ft row dug. At one point when I reached to pull some out, a critter ran out of the hole we were digging. A vole. Dad is pretty quick, he got it, then the cat got it. Every so often we would find a hill that had been feasted on. We use those potatoes anyway, just cut away the chewed up part. Some are minor, some more severe. The ones with numerous chewed areas get dehydrated for dog treats. Lost count of how many buckets we dug, some of those taters were huge, 2-4 lbs each. Amazing they got that big with little rain and no watering. I was planning to go home at 3, but ended up staying until 5. Mamma slept well last night! This is how you dig when you are 90. The ground is pretty soft so it works for him!
These 3 were still in the ground but he had to have a pic. Fork is for size comparison.

binnylou, my philosophy of dahlias: One can NEVER have too many dahlias! breezygardener, your puppy is a beauty, so alert, and such an intelligent expression. I do see the little bit of golden by the top of her ears. She really is a treasure; I hope you and hubby enjoy her as much as I expect she'll enjoy you two and her new home. Has she met your horses yet?

Yesterday was a mostly outside chores day. It’s time to get ‘er done or do it next spring. I mulched the remaining bare spots with chopped straw and scattered grass seed on those. Timing is perfect because we are getting awesome gentle rain…probably all day and overnight too.
Harvested some compost for the raised beds. I should have planted garlic, but it will wait until after eye surgery. Tomorrow is a COVID test and Wednesday is surgery day. The garlic bed is ready, I just have to poke the holes. Since I still need to purchase straw, I’ll have to borrow from other raised beds in order to mulch the garlic.
Removed more tomato vines. They are currently sitting in a garbage can in the garden, waiting for the remaining tomato plants. At least the container doesn’t hold water. The next outside chore day, those vines will go to the burn ring. Tomatoes don’t go to the compost pile. I think of the nutrition that the plants have harvested from the raised bed soil…I’d like to recycle that nutrition, but I’m hesitant because of blight. Maybe it doesn’t matter…they get blight every year anyway.
Worked at removing Peony debris. I’d started this project previously…had 3 cleaned up, but apparently another project screamed a little louder. I got 6 more cleaned up yesterday.
Came inside just before dark…hubby is lucky that I still had enough umph to fix supper. Chili worked just fine.
The frost that arrived only affected the area south of our house. That area slopes away from the house and is quite a bit lower than the house/barn area. Petunias survived the frost…they’ll be lovin’ this rain and I can enjoy them for at least another week.

Has she met your horses yet? We took her for a walk over to the field yesterday, & she was a bit shell-shocked & growled a little. The horses were just curious. We didn't bring her close, because we didn't want to overwhelm her. Took her back again today, & she was just interested - no growling. I'm sure they will soon become no big deal to her.

I've spent hours on Facetime or phone- first with my sis for our weekly FT visit. She had a lot to say this week (over 2 hours); and then 2 hours with our niece who is getting a divorce and needed support. She and her husband actually have a very healthy approach, are doing this respectfully and with love and are doing as well as can be expected under the circumstances. It's her parents and sister who have completely freaked out and are treating her like a fragile 12 year old rather than the healthy 32 year old woman that she is. We just gave her the space to express and are supporting them both as they make this shift. But, oh my goodness, that was a lot of phone time for one day. Time to meet the neighbors for our weekly outdoor social hour.

Feasted on baked steak, mashed potatoes, corn, green beans, coleslaw and hot rolls for my birthday dinner followed by pumpkin pie and a lemon desert. Stopped on the way home and picked up a lemon meringue pie MIL made me and think I'll be freezing some desserts. Noticed two new piles of wood mulch the DOH dumped along the road and hope to bring a few loads home by the end of the week. Kiddo has a field trip in the morning and I have the opportunity to go since I'm a trained volunteer. Will be the first field trip for both of us since she started school and should be interesting.

Today was more 'get ready for rain' work. The biggest job was mucking out the small pond - in-ground, concrete, old spa. Holds 300 or more gallons. I was just going to lower the water level so it could refill with rain, but I ended up draining almost all of it (onto bare, dry soil that will get planted next year) and getting rid of 95% of the water hyacinth that had clogged it this year. Mucking the pond was on the list for this year... but not today's list. But once I got started... Glad that's done, so when the rain comes it should fill. One of the down-spouts drains into it. I also drained a nearby 100 gallon stock tank that I use for blueberry watering (acidifying water, fertilizer, chlorine evap). As long as it's going to fall, might as well fill it with rainwater too. I use a sump pump to move water around. This year I'm planning on reducing the blueberry patch to maybe 25 of the best plants. They are in containers and are getting old. As am I. Time for some hot tea - I'm very pleased, but tired.

I put two trash cans of lawn trash out for tomorrow - nothing left in the garden gets composted, but I still left stuff in there that is producing somewhat. Most of my work was indoors today - I'll try more outside tomorrow. Supposed to be warm, but eventually, wet.

Picked yet another bunch of early-summer-planted tatsoi, and it's still mild and not bitter (!)...We didn't have a particularly brutal-hot summer, I guess that helped. The new fall planting is coming right along. Having failed to grow spinach for years, this stuff has fit that bill for us. Love it.
