gardendmpls, I used my sister's recipe. It had sugar, I made 2 batches, one with sugar and one without. I definitely like the ones with no sugar. Wonder what went wrong with yours. I also made some crock pickles, that was time consuming and I don't think they are any better than the quicker version.

desertwoman We get loads of those little maple helicopters. But first it's the bud debris prior to leafing out. Now it's helicopter season. I'm forever cleaning them up.

emmsmommy , It's good to learn that your husband's surgeon is diligent and responds quickly to a potential issue. As to the torn rotator cuff, is the surgeon suggesting PT as opposed to surgery? When I experienced a torn rotator cuff in my R arm, I had PT, and didn't learn until after that that the surgeon seemed to have a bias against operating on "older" people. (I was 66 at the time, and didn't consider that to be excessively old). I was disappointed enough not to go back to him, but was closing out my sister's house at the time and didn't feel like trying to find another arm doctor. After several months, the discomfort vanished, as I kept doing exercises, and followed the same regimen when the left shoulder cuff tore as well. Over the years, the only times either bothers me are during drastic weather changes, usually cold ones. I use it as an excuse to pamper myself and spend some time reading with all the work put aside temporarily. I hope your husband gets good news (i.e., no tumor) and that you and your daughter feel better quickly. desertwoman , those pesky seeds can be such a nuisance! Thirty gallons of seeds is really unsettling; it must be like a seed blizzard. For me, it's the ignored, aging and unsafe cottonwood on the neighbor's property. The former neighbors did nothing with the yard (other than set a few fires!) and the tree is now a monster. Every June it drops large puffs of cottonballs, which migrate and start new saplings. Of course they come down in my yard. And it's hard to work outside b/c I have to mask and wear eye protection as I don't want any fuzzies in my eyes, nose or mouth. Until I realized I had to mask for a few weeks, I battled the little fuzzies attempting to colonize my nose (not to be gross or anything, but it's hard to breathe with those seeds settling in my nasal passages). The obnoxious black locust in another yard also decided to plant in my yard; those saplings are so thorny that I just dread digging them out, but if I don't, they grow like Jack's beanstalk.

desertwoman, Mumsey, SpringRain🕊️, Thank you for the good thoughts. We're keeping a positive attitude and praying for the best. SpringRain🕊️, the othopedic surgeon feels that PT will probably be the best option for the tear and we're so grateful that our request to be referred to him was fulfilled since he did hubby's knee surgery and we have confidence in him. As for the general surgeon, we're not happy. Since January he's told hubby it would get better with time and ordered no imagery until we pushed for the MRI which he was reluctant to do. At one point hubby went to the ER in extreme pain and they did an x-ray which did show arthritis but nothing else.

emmsmommy I hope that the PT helps your husband with that shoulder. And I hope that biopsy is clean. I have a really bad shoulder, that eventually I will probably have to have replaced, so I can relate to that pain! Prayers and positive thoughts for him, and you, as well, in these trying times.

Made it to Illinois ok. I noticed a couple days ago the sunglasses I bought from the eye dr didn’t seem to be blocking enough light, especially when sun is on my left. So got to thinking about clip ons. To wear on glasses under the sunglasses. Viola! Perfect. Worked like a charm.
Stopped at sis’s on the way but wishing I hadn’t. Ended up with major detour that took me through the Cedar Rapids metropolis during rush hour. Ugh. Normally I could escape that. Being familiar with the city helped.
DDs yard is very hilly and steep. She has garden scattered around here and there, using the hillside for beds built up with rocks. Deer are an issue due to wooded valleys. Along with the occasional coyote and a beaver from nearby stream wanting to gnaw on her deck. He has been caught in the act.
Cell reception has improved since I was last here. Yay!

I got my last 3 tomatoes in today - ended up with 36, the most I've planted in a long time! I got in my only Chocolate Cherry, Pinky Blast, and Annie's Singapore cherry, and another Wow! Sungold. I have 15 extra plants, for some friends - fortunately, none of the plants I put in snapped off, or had any problems, and most are growing well (though, of course, I don't know about the last several). The 42 day has some flowers open now, though the kustengold, with the first open blossom, is still the fastest growing of any plant out there.
The weather is great today - almost up to average finally, and getting warmer in the forecast. Tomorrow, the eggplants might go in; if not, then Saturday. Peppers go out for starting hardening off tomorrow (my friend's larger peppers are already hardened off, so he'll get those tomorrow, with some tomatoes). I've been hardening off the okras, squash, and gourds long enough - they go in Saturday. Soon, I can turn my lights off upstairs!
I have a few extra bottle gourds and an extra bitter melon, if my Indian friend wants to plant some...I keep forgetting to ask her!

Well I've fought my cold in a rather unconventional way, I've worked it off. Yesterday was the first nice day we've had in a week or so and even though it was chilly, I push mowed the hilly parts of our yard on both sides of the driveway. Today I continued in the front yard, and got part of the back mowed before I ran out of gas. Sifted the composted chicken poop and will top dress my tomatoes in the big pots with it. Some of it didn't seem to break down as much so will either compost it again or side dress the rhubarb transplants with it. Finally going to drop off Mother's Day gifts tomorrow and some of the pepper and tomato plants too. All of the tomato plants spent the day in full sun so will be sorting them out and hopefully get the rest of mom's to her over the weekend if we're all over our colds. It will be so nice to have a partially empty greenhouse so I can start more plants. I've also been prioritizing the outside chores and have put a few on the back burner for now.

I pruned dead wood out of roses, lilacs and started to cut back the first of lavender plants. And more sweeping up those !#&*@$! siberian elm seeds. Hand watered some pots of annuals that aren't running on drip irrigation yet. And I think today was the last day for the smaller chiles and paprika to be in the green house. The past 3 days I have let them sit out for a couple of hours before moving them into the house for the night. Tomorrow will be their big day to be out all day next to the cart with all the other chiles, tomatoes and basils. They all still will come in past the front door for the night as we are still in the 40's overnight.

I put out all the rest of my plants to harden off, and turned the lights off, finally! A lot of the rest will get planted; the last peppers maybe Sunday, which isn't really that late, around here. 5-15 used to be the date to shoot for, and a couple of times waaaaaay back, I planted on 6-1, and it was still too cold! It was just that all of the peppers were getting buds on them, and had to go out.

Two months ago we cleaned the house and I remember saying it was good we were doing it then because I wouldn't be cleaning for a while , with gardening season starting up. Well today I just couldn't stand it anymore and we got most of the house cleaned. Just have left to do a good clean of the stove and one of the bathrooms and we're done.
Also started letting the smaller chile starts stay out all day- a couple of hours in the sun and then the shade for the rest of the day. Into the house, nights until we get above 50º- probably at least another week, maybe two.

I dropped off three flats of bedding plants and two flats of tomatoes and peppers at my parent's house this morning and was rejoicing in the idea that the 2 flats of peppers and eggplant that I've been bringing inside should fit in the greenhouse this evening with no problem. For some reason it seems to be even more stuffed than it was before. Tomorrow I'll sort out tomatoes, give them some fish fertilizer and prepare them for their journey as well. Hubby and I decided we're having a plant/yard sale either the Saturday before Memorial Day or the next one. I figure by then mom and I will either have our plants in the ground or know how many we'll need. I have several boxes of store inventory that's already priced and hubby has a few things as well, so it's just a matter of grabbing a few tables and loading up the plants.
