Just learned I am under House Arrest, otherwise known as Work From Home, through the end of April. Of course I will diligently monitor my computer/phone/insert name of e-device and interact with my work peers to guide them through whatever mini crisis or incidents they are experiencing...This is going to be my best garden season EVER!!!!

I went "out there" today- grocery shopping and the credit union. Amazing how much change there is from one week ago. Personal cloth shopping bags can no longer be used- store issued paper sacks only. Shelves are better stocked but still empty spots like TP, and sparse spots like nut butters. Bulk bins are emptied and shut down for now- pre-packs are stacked here, there and everywhere throughout the store. They keep count of how many they allow in at one time, to minimize how many are in the store so I had to line up outside- and wait my turn behind 11 others-6 ft apart, of course. And I was seeing the better angels of ourselves all about- people are being so kind and considerate. And at Whole Foods they have hired people to walk up and down the aisles, spraying disinfectant/wiping shelves and goods. At the Credit Union can no longer go into the lobby- drive up only. I got a little ungrounded, wanted to pull my car forward so the next one behind me didn't have to wait while I put receipt in a safe place. I drove off with the pneumatic tube container! I was about a block away when I realized it- they were calling me at the same time Through it all I wore my mask, used hand sanitizer multiple times, wiped down steering wheel each time I got in and did not touch my face- not once!. But not nearly as diligent as our ms mumsey. Washed my hands thoroughly when I got home.

Was out today stocking up on chicken feed. Got gas. Picked up a bale of pro-mix to start my seeds. Crickets from the pet store for the gecko. Veggies and Passover supplies from the grocery, then home. Found out the governor cancelled Spring break. Like if we weren't giving the kids assignments, they would actually go outside instead of playing video games all day. Don't mind working, but will be absent several days for religious observance and they take money out of your check for that to pay a substitute, whether or not they get one (which they won't, especially since we are working from home). That's $165. out of my check each day that I technically am not getting paid for. Will inquire tomorrow to see what the union worked out. Grrrr.

Yesterday I gave some lettuce to a neighbor and a friend. Also made bread and transplanted a couple of lettuce seedlings.

Spent 2 hours working outside yesterday. Nice sunny day. I started straightening up the garden, I moved back straw from the paths, found the black plastic edges and tidies them up. Scooped up all the broken down straw and dirt that had washed to the edges and tossed it all on the garden. Gave the pea row a dose of it. Threw in some Dwarf Siberian Kale seed.

Looks sunny out today, but I'm stuck inside catching up on grading and lesson plans. They cancelled Spring break and I have no idea if we will get comp time or if we are being volunteered. All I know is if they deduct $165 per day for the last two days of Passover to pay a substitute (which they won't) I will be plenty ticked off. They think if the kids have schoolwork they will have something to do and stay inside. I always thought that the parent's rules, or lack of them, was what determined this.

I grew garlic chives from seed several years ago but am just beginning to learn how to use it. I have been using it in salads. This morning I had shears-chopped garlic chives on fried potatoes and in an omelet. It is a useful early green food and more productive than regular chives.

A little too productive around here. I dug up & brought one pot of it from my parents' garden in NY down here to VA 20+ years ago & now have it everywhere in large swathes. I'd definitively kill most of it if it wasn't for the fact that the lovely late-summer/early fall blossoms weren't so attractive to bees & butterflies.

A little too productive around here. But do you use garlic chives much? I am just learning how to use it and think it is a valuable food. It is used in Chinese cooking. I saw a video of it being cooked in a wok and served like a green. I won't use it in such quantity because I do not know its vitamin K content. I am careful to remove all flowers to keep it from seeding out, and it is confined in tires.

Yes, I do use them. Primarily in Chinese dishes, although I have sometimes used them atop baked potatoes & salads. The flowers in salads as well. In the Asian markets around here they sell it in large thick bunches, frequently with flower buds, & it is cooked more as a green in itself rather than an ingredient or garnish.

We went shopping this morning, bought two cherry trees, strawberry plants, seed potatoes and what I thought was a blueberry plant that turned out to be an Aronia. Filled the gas tank, came home and planted the trees, 24 strawberry plants, and one blueberry impostor. I had all my seedling trays out for several hours today, all are looking good.

Filled out mine, also. Worked all day and then took time to listen in on a Town Hall meeting by our Union. They are trying to make sure religious people don't loose out because of the cancelled Spring Break. Also found that a lot of parents are complaining that their kids are overwhelmed and so are they, so we'll be asked to lighten up, after two weeks of being told to give all the work we would give during class time. Our principal has already acted on the new direction. It is hard on the parents to try to teach several kids a lot of material usually on one computer (or a cell phone). I am using humor in the work, such as a video of Foghorn Leghorn (1940's Warner Brothers) with a few questions on leghorn chickens and predators.

Rained most of the morning yesterday, when it cleared off we went for a long drive over the countryside just to get out. Made only one stop, that was the hospital to drop off masks. We chose to head SE, quite hilly that way and hadn't been to that area in years. Nice to get away.

Raked the thyme lawn, pulled some weeds. Got my lettuce and kale starts in the ground and mulched. Will direct sow more over the weekend. Spread some compost over the flower bed in front of the veggie garden. Transplanted some volunteer sunflowers. Watered all of that. That's enough for one day. I need to water everything - haven't had any measurable precip in weeks.
