Regular Rutger on the left...........250 on the right............So you see the 250 is shorter, yep........walking you guys through this chat of mine!
Regular rutger fruit:
Rutger 250 has some tomato deformity and I'm seeing some yellow leaves.............which could be anything fungal, which always is a Sin, no matter what form it takes...........
Can you guys see that one odd shaped fruit in there? Kinda 2 lobed?
This is what I know:
1. 250 is shorter..........more DETERMINATE. Rutgers is SUPPOSED to be Semi Determinate..........
2. Regular Rutgers have bigger fruit at the moment............which will be subject to change......just sharing observations in my yard.........
3. I'm seeing a few odd shaped mators on the 250's and that leads me to believe this crop is not yet STABLE, at least for the lot of seeds I used.
4. A different lot of seeds might VERY WELL do better or worse..................Kinda like amaize corn: lot 1 sucked, but lot 3 was good...................do you guys understand what I am chatting about?
I hope so...............
Sometimes I chat............right in the middle of a thought.............
I tried to do good here.............
Because this 250 is interesting to me..................

Deformed tomatoes can be caused by genetics but also damaged pollen from temps that are too hot or cold, insects, viruses, excess humidity causing pollen to stick and probably a host of other things.
I am looking forward to seeing if the flavor of this tomato is better than others. You are growing regular Rutgers (I am not) so you can do a taste test. That should be interesting.

Yeah..............flavor..................dang shame my taste buds suck...........compared to other taste testers!
I think ripe Green Zebras are BLAND...............so when we get to the taste testing.........my opinion will be worthless!

I have one ripening on the 250 and one on the regular................I'm going to be upset if I can't share a pic when I pluck and cut.............
By the end of the week.............I see spaghetti sauce in the making for freezing...........not just one meal.
Here we go.............the first big flush is coming to Maryland!

I made spaghetti sauce today.............I took a pic of the 250 compared to the Regular and Jersey Boy, can't show the pic. Taste test, for my taste buds: 1. 250 is sweeter than regular and Jersey boy. 2. 250 and Regular didn't have green shoulders and stink bug whitening of the insides from their sucking like the Jersey Boy. and Brandywine. 3. They don't seem to be prone to cracking in drought then deluge of rain...........but I did give them water to help prepare for that. 4. thin skins, peeled nice for sauce today when blanched. 5. I'll grow them again............so, I guess that's the best word. 6. Even in the heat for 11 days, over 90 degrees, they are still producing flowers and setting NEW babies. Hoping son comes in the morning to sit in a chair so that the computer sees the camera. It only seems to work when he is here.

Stink bug bites cause white spots on the skin of tomatoes but the hard white lumps inside are from something else according to the University of Illinois:
"I also get calls from gardeners who cut open a tomato and find hard white areas inside the fruit," he related. "Warm temperatures during the ripening period cause this condition to develop. Just cut the affected areas out. Some varieties are more susceptible to this condition than others."
I also made my first spaghetti sauce yesterday and it was so good with those fresh tomatoes.

"Warm temperatures during the ripening period cause this condition to develop. I've had plenty of heat..............I hate white lumps.

I never knew what they were before I Googled them. I usually see them in the Brandywine's and I pick them out when making sauce.

As far as I know, summer temperatures are always warm during the ripening period. I do not expect ripening tomatoes in December.

Did he figure out what you're doing wrong with the camera and your computer? Nope. It worked once, he left, and it hasn't worked since. Had to do it at his house............I left, and he managed to fight PB and get a couple more pic downloaded for me. So very irritating..............

What do you think of the Rutgers 250 flavor lisaann? Hubby thought that they were very good but didn't see anything fabulous about them as advertised. We are just as happy with Jersey Boy and I think that I will stick with that. The Rutgers 250 are smaller than others too.

What do you think of the Rutgers 250 flavor Sweeter than the Regular, same size, and quantity. Bigger than my Brandywine............but heck, any tomato besides a cherry is bigger than them things. I need to start my list of the ONLY varieties of vegetables I am growing next year, while all this is fresh in my head, and new catalogs this winter can't influence my opinions. Once the new catalogs come out............I seem to forget my summer thoughts.

Rutgers 250 These vary in size from 2" to 3&1/4" I found these to be meaty and little seed cavity(the larger tomatoes had bigger seed cavity) and the taste was very wonderful. The plants grew to be 2' to 3' and some plants had more tomatoes than others. Here there are 4. Have not compared to Big Mamas yet. Will update post later but I did not grow the Jersey or Rutgers.
