binnylou, With drought, it's possible that something was very thirsty and needed to get to that water. A coyote? Do you have a field cam by the gate?

No cam by the gate…both cams are currently in the house.
There were no changes to the gate overnight, but somebody moved the bucket. Time to set the live trap in the garden again. It’s currently next to the garden shed, waiting for a groundhog. Caught a possum overnight. He will go to the back four and be released. I took his picture…I think he smiled for the camera.

I saw that news story…maybe 40 miles ATCF. My brother tells me that there’s one near Tracy, but that hasn’t made the news. Might be here say. I suppose a mountain lion would take care of our ground hog problem.

Not necessarily pesky but this critter has been wandering through the properties on our lane today. It's a first- at least in the 14 years we have been here. Can a moose be pesky?

desertwoman , oh, my! If he wanted my garden, I’d just ask if he’d like catsup with that. but, just think of the piles of 💩 that he could leave for you. Add that to your compost heap, stand back, and feel the warmth. No more cold composting.

Update on the moose: On Tuesday 'Marty Moose' ended up 5 miles away, in town close to the historic plaza. Have learned he has been wandering Northern New Mexico for about a year, with sightings in various locations. Santa Fe was the furthest south he had gotten. There are no established moose populations in New Mexico They tranquilized him and relocated him close to the Colorado border, where he likely wandered from. He was released into an area with no moose populations but closer to adjacent populations in Colorado, where he will hopefully find what he was/is searching for. And although moose search far and wide for a mate, this was further and wider than most. They estimate he is 4-5 years old and about 1000 pounds.

Well, for the first time ever I caught a little groundhog red-handed munching on my "Green Zebra" tomatoes a little while ago. And at the same time noticed it also took advantage of an abundance of "Sungold" cherry tomatoes that had burst & fallen to the ground. I was planning on cleaning those up today & tossing them, but no need now. Honestly - while I've had groundhogs bother a lot of things in my deck garden, they've never touched any nightshade veggies before - either fruit or leaves.

The Princess took care of a ground squirrel, found it on the block path behind the garage. I'm surprised at 10 years old that she was that quick. Good dog.

So he was relocated back to the Colorado border area on September 13. He is headed back this way!! He is currently about halfway back between the border and Santa Fe. This is one determined fella.

So, just after dark this evening, I was checking the front step for deliveries. No deliveries, but there was a possum no more than six feet from the door. I watched her for a while…she appeared to be gathering leaves and stuffing them in to her pouch. Her tail/rump appeared to be covered with leaves.
Research tells me that she was gathering leaves for her nest…not putting them in to her pouch, but passing the leaves to her back foot to be gathered and carried by her tail.
I’d never seen such a thing. My first thought was that she had given birth and was gathering babies and putting them in to her pouch.
No research needed, but we obviously have more than one possum in the neighborhood.
