So when I went to Home Depot I saw that many many of the plants had systemic insecticide. I was very bothered though by systemic insecticide in FRUIT! There were blueberry bushes, lemon trees and olive trees all labeled that they had been treated with systemics. Really? This is OK? The blueberries were the only ones actually in danger of fruiting this year but still...they were selling fast too. It was like a feeding frenzy at HD.

The nicinoids that are suspected in the bee die off are systemic. Lyods has agreed to stop using in the next 4 years ????. Since they are using systemically they persist in the plants and soil and continue killing bees as well as the other bugs ...we will be lucky if there are any bees left. home Depot has not agreed to stop using growers who use these chemicals. I haven't bought any items for my gardens from them for more than two years.

So they label it as being treated with systemic? I didn't know that.

This is good to know. Thanks. I haven't bought plants from HD in many years. I like to support the local nurseries when I need a plant.

I think they are now required to label them if they are treated. I plan to get my plants and the spring plant sale. Hopefully no systemics there but at least if there are they have to be labeled now. The tag makes it sound like a great thing that the plants are treated.

I don't buy anything from our local HD! They are pathetic here! No customer service of any kind and IF you can find an employee....they don't know a thing! Besides that, they are higher priced than Lowes on most things. Most of the plants at our HD come from either Bonnie's Plants or one other grower...our Lowes only uses Bonnies for veggie plants they use other growers for their flowers.
And I just discovered a HUGE nursery that is about an hour from our house. They must have about 40 acres of rows of plants & trees! I found the Ixora plants there that I had wanted...for $8 each in 3 gal. pots. Our local nursery only had some left from last year in 1 gal. pots at $15 each! Our local nursery is not good for lots of things and they don't grow most of their plants either, they buy from other growers. They do grow a lot of succulents, but not many other things.

Agreed, I don't buy edibles from big box stores such as HD, Lowes or Wally-World. Most of the help have no clue as to horticulture or any of the plant sciences. Definitely support the local independent nursery folk.

My favorite nursery is a mom and pop operation, who are getting way up there in age. They've been in business as long as I've been in the area (34 years)- even longer- When I was in there last week, I said to 'pop' , who was writing out a sales slip for my purchases, "please don't ever stop using those (sales slips)" He responded "not if I have anything to say about it".
The next two generations are now involved and there have been a bunch of changes ( almost all of them good) but I really do like those handwritten sales slips!
The plants are beautiful, the starts are vibrant, and they know their stuff. Even those latin names!
