So could other things if Mexicans are blocked from crossing the border. I'm going to stock up at the grocery store tomorrow.
BTW, does anyone have a root cellar? Part of your basement, or a separate outdoor root cellar? And if so, do you store your veggies there?
Maybe I'll get a second frig as well.
This was posted on the BP Forum: auto plants could shut down quickly as well, presumably thrusting thousands if not more autoworkers to be laid off.

lisaann, Unfortunately my tree isn't going to produce! But I see Aldi has avocados for $.49 this week. Wish they would keep longer. If this border closing thing happens, I'm sure they will still be available, at a very inflated price.

I don't think Mexico is the only country that grows avocados.

deckman22, Right you are. Some are grown in California, Florida, Peru, Columbia and others. The US is the world's 3rd largest producer. I don't see them going away, probably fewer at higher prices.

Mumsey, avocados can be stored in the fridge once they are ripe. They will stay that way for a few days and won't rot.

octave1, Yes, I buy ones that are very unripe if possible. Then leave them on the counter for a day or two. Then to the fridge. I think I keep them for more than a week sometimes.

One other time, when avocados were cheap, but there was a theat, I think of a disease(?), I diced up a bunch of them and froze them. They did ok, though the bags were messy to get it out of them. I might do this again, with those 49¢ avocados from Aldi's.

Some are grown in California, Florida, Peru, Columbia and others. The US is the world's 3rd largest producer. I don't see them going away, probably fewer at higher prices. However, Mexico is the only one that grows them year 'round. Avocados use to be a seasonal crop for us until we started increased importing from Mexico in the mid 90's. And they provide avocados 3:1 to California's crop. California's season is from about February- September Florida- about July - January Other countries like Peru, Dominican Republic, etc fill in to a far lesser degree at various times of the year. So yes, it would come down to availability. We'd see avocados, but far fewer and far more expensive. A lot of produce comes from Mexico that we have come to depend on year 'round.

The supposed avocado famine will not affect me. I am so primitive as never to have bought one. I am evidence that life without avocados is possible.

Shoo!
I must admit, I was making fun! Avocados don't impress me. I figure since I didn't grow up with such a thing, I never acquired a taste for it. Same with Hubby.
What would be the most important export from Mexico, or are you telling me Avocados are the MAIN thing?
If that's the case, the border should have been shut long ago! hahahhaha
