Fortunately there are mineral based sunscreens, which are safer.. They tend to be a little more expensive, but I stopped comparing price of conventional to organic decades ago, when buying my organic foods and condiments and healthier sunscreens, make up, etc- anything put in or on my body. IMO it is a small price to pay for keeping me and our environment healthier. And I like supporting the manufacturers and growers who produce healthier products.I consider it a donation to the planet.

Yikes! I wasn't aware of these toxic chemicals in Sunscreen. Just checked my sunscreen ingredients; it doesn't have those chemicals, but I've always wondered about the safety of the other chemicals. desertwoman, do you have any specific recommendations on safe sunscreens? I would easily rely on something you selected; I know you're thorough about safety issues.

I went through this with youngest daughter a year or so ago. From what we found the mineral-based sunscreens are better for the environment. You may look like a geisha girl, but c'est la vie. Badger seemed to be a pretty good brand.
Mexoryl and Tinosorb are used more in Europe. I forget the details, though.

SpringRain🕊️, I use Alba Botanica Sensitive Fragrance free Mineral sunscreen (SPF30). I can pick it up easily at the natural food stores in town. Whole Foods carries it, too and it's also available at Amazon. Badger is good too. I've recently heard about Blue Lizard SPF30 that is an Australian company and it's available at Amazon. but don't know too much about this product first hand. What you want to avoid are octinoxate and oxybenzone and a lot of so called "natural " sunscreen products have these two ingredients!

I have some Blue Lizard, but don't have enough experience with it to comment.

Consumer Reports just published a detailed article about sunscreens. While they say that the mineral (zinc oxide and titanium oxide) ones do not block the uv a rays (the most harmful) as well, they do list a number of chemical products that are not in the list of those that are dangerous to the corals.
