Pretty but scary...
When I was littler, I used to create my own perfectly blue flowers by adding blue food coloring to the vase water of Queen Anne's Lace... That worked...much safer...
Mom wasn't too thrilled the day I spilled the blue water on the tan living room rug though... O_o

I'm not sure that I'm ready for a GMO version of Mumsey.

I liked the blue color of the GM mum, but probably would not ever purchase one. I'll find other blue flowers to enjoy.
We were at Home Depot last night checking out the One Day plant specials. There were a couple of gals there, one asking the other if the tomato plants were GMO. "Oh no," said the older lady, "but you do know that your zucchini is now GMO." WHAT? That surprised me, so I did a Google search and found more GM plants than I wanted to know. Not only non-organic zucchini, but also yellow squash. I don't plan on growing either this year. If the seeds don't say organic, they may be GM.

Tomato Z, My understanding is that the GMO seeds are only sold to commercial farmers. The seeds available to us home gardeners are not GMO- even non organic seed.

desertwoman, I am almost completely sure that the seeds offered to home gardeners are non-GMO. We usually purchase only organic veggies at the grocery store OR grow them myself. This year I downsized by almost half, so there's no room for squash unless we try them in pots. Last year I planted 1 zuke in a pot and got 3 squash. I'd rather concentrate on tomatoes!

Tomato Z, There are more and more plants being genetically engineered. Potatoes and apples coming right up. Simplot is the potato company that has them, haven't seen any in grocery stores here. McDonald's has declined to use them. Since you only buy organic you are safe. Organic cannot be GMO, at least not right now anyway. There is a way to tell from the PLU sticker number. If it starts with 3 or 4 it's conventionally grown (not organic). If it starts with an 8 it's GMO. If it starts with a 9 it's organic. The way to remember that is "I hate 8, 9 is fine". This reminds me to ask Aldi about their zucchini. I never buy the stuff but just curious. I didn't see a PLU since it's prepackaged with 2-3 a pack.

I knew 4 and 9 but didn't know about 8 as GMO. Good to know! Thanks Mumsey,

Mumsey, Thanks for the "The way to remember that is "I hate 8, 9 is fine". I seem to remember reading about apples being on a list to be introduced as a GM product. It's sad what we're leaving for the next generations to come. lilolpeapicker, thanks for the pineapple sadness. I just read about the scores of testing done on the Hawaiian islands, with Kauai being one of the islands with the largest number of products. Maui looks like she's on the warpath against GMO. Hope for the best.
