We've seen that before, too. Black, Rat, and corn snakes can eat a boxcar-full of field mice and other vermin, but they also raid bird nests and chicken coops for eggs. Hey, a snake's got to eat, too... Mixed feelings when I see a hawk snatching one, I wish they'd snatch a copperhead. But hey, a hawk's gotta eat, too...

I frequently have to remove Black rat snakes from around bird nests or pull them (gently) from my birdhouses. Then I take them for a long walk (around half a mile) & release them, otherwise they'll come right back to where they were before. Many birds will abandon nests once a snake has visited, but some - especially if they have nestlings - will return once I've removed the predator.

I occasionally see garter snakes in the yard and have found them in my bulkhead - I assume they like it in there because the sun warms it. Supposedly, there are timber rattlers in some of the preserves and I have found their skins, but never seen one there.

We don't see many snakes here in town. Used to have garter snakes in the country, and bull snakes. We had a garter snake who would climb the pole bean fence and sun himself daily. Named him Mr. Bean.

We find Black rat snake skins here all the time - some of them of a width & length that would make your hair stand on end at the very thought of what the owner looked like. Some honking big ones live on our property.

Went to gather composted chicken poop this morning and was cautious because I figured the garter snake might be resting inside of the tote. Sure enough one was in there but a small one and not the one I'm used to seeing in the garden. It was chilly so he didn't fuss much when I moved him but did notice that he slithered back under the tote when I was finished. I attributed the lack of slugs lately to the fact that it's been dry, but since slugs are a main part of the garter snake's diet, maybe they are keeping them under control. My parents are freaked out that I'm coexisting with snakes. If they only knew that I'm planning on making them some shelters in the garden.

I was just out in the garden and was going to walk across one of the beds and stopped for some reason. Looked down and there was a big ole garter snake lying in the pile of leaves. The pile of leaves was left alone.

Mr. Breezy saw our first Black rat snake of the season two weeks ago down by our barn. While he is definitely NOT a snake lover in any way, shape, or form, he was glad that he caught sight of it so he could avoid it, as he was conducting the first official "mow" of the season.

Yup. This is the time of year I walk gingerly and with eyes on alert for snakes making their first appearances. Haven't seen one yet.

I wish I could say I see snakes on a regular basis, but have only seen one garter snake and one black snake in the whole 40 years I've lived here. I've seen many more over by the creek, about 1½ blocks from my house.
