SpringRain🕊️, I've seen robin egg shells in various places, no where near trees. I'm thinking the bluejays are stealing them, they are quite the robbers!

Blue Jay? We do not get them here. We get one called Steller's Jay occasionally. Then there is the ever present Magpie. He is the character.

The Princess has discovered there are baby birds in the tree. She sits on the deck sniffing the air and watching the nest. We will have to be watchful for them to fledge since they will probably be on the ground testing their wings.

One of the 2 little robins has left the nest. Found it in the garden this morning, nearly stepped on it. It ran off squawking and Mom was on the fence screaming at me. At least in the garden, The Princess won't get it. The other one is still in the nest. James, She doesn't eat her catches, just plays with them til they don't move anymore. Of course I don't catch her in the act.

We have three cats hanging out here. (outside cats, they don't come in the house) Every now and then they will drag in a dead bird or mouse and just sit it on the rug in front of the door. I think they are bringing it to us for dinner. Sharing.

We have many Mourning Doves around. This afternoon I saw a pair on the ground, displaying, and literally hugging and snuggling each other. They didn't seem to mind my nearby presence. "Coo-ooh, coo, coo, cooh."

3 degrees, calm, sunny. Mourning doves are nice. Someone brought those d----- Eu Doves in here and let them loose, now we have them in big herds.

Those Robin egg shells you see nowhere near a tree----after they have hatched, the adults carry the empties some distance away from the nest. Don't know if it's just house cleaning or something else. May have something to do with keeping the nest undetected. kc

May have something to do with keeping the nest undetected. How clever of the birds! Do other animals have this wisdom?

I've noticed wrens and other birds carrying out old shell pieces after the chicks hatch. Probably does help foil predators, and besides...who likes a messy house?

Yesterday a bird hit the glass in the back door and fell to the porch stunned. I heard the collision and went to investigate. The bird was sprawled on the porch with a frog in its mouth. The frog hopped out but was injured beyond recovery. I put it off the porch. After a few minutes the bird recovered enough to stand up. It was solid brown on top and solid grey underneath. There were none of the usual thrasher dots. Tail feathers were edged with black. I think it was a female brown thrasher of some sort. It took nearly an hour for the bird to recover. Later in the afternoon I saw it in the area where I put its frog and think it came back for it.

That glass window, dark on the inside, light outside acts like a mirror. A bird will think it can fly through it, but as it approaches it sees its own reflection coming right at it, so evasive maneuvers to avoid collision are in order. Yes, the bird may still hit the window, but it will not likely be at full force head on.

Yesterday was a nice cooler day, very pleasant outside, so I stood outside on the porch for a few moments after getting my mail and listened to a cardinal serenade. I think both birds were in a tree next door, but just slightly apart physically. They were singing so beautifully, so sweetly, that they reminded me of Jeannette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy in one of their operettas. Thinking about it, I think perhaps they were singing "Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life".
I don't recall ever hearing such a duet, with such vibrancy, and enthusiasm. It must have been a good day for them.
It certainly was a special moment.
