spring rain, I'm glad you mentioned insect population. Fingers crossed.... I haven't seen any ticks but my herbs have been plagued by a persistent population of something that apparently has a refined palate and picks only the best herbs. It would be wonderful for them to find another home.
Folks, all this talk of 60 degree weather is making me seriously envious of your warm weather. Are you extending visitation invitations? Could I bring some snow and below zero wind chills?

You can visit any time as long as you give me a week's warning....that gives me time to find new homes for all the "stuff" that gets shoved into the guest bedroom! But NO bringing snow or colder temps than what we normally have...we haven't reached 50º so far today! :(

Veggie Gal reporting from the Wedge. The waves are 2 to 3 ft today, very calm. In the high 70's yesterday and today. The sky is beautiful, lots of stuff sprouting in my garden. Wish you all were here..........
I wish we were too. I heard on the news this morning that on Monday only 15 minutes outdoors can lead to frostbite.
I was just outside filling bird feeders without wearing gloves and my fingers felt like they were frozen solid but the "real" cold weather isn't even supposed to arrive until tomorrow!

Lat and others, the report from the Wedge today: High waves, in the high 70's to low 80's and windy. Beautiful day. Excellent. Sounds like I should head down to the peninsula for a walk Trouble is I always seem to end up at Perry's by the pier. High 80's here with little breeze. Gardening in shade as much as I can.

Go ahead - keep it up. I think with a few phone calls I can have a contract out on you by morning.
Hubby & I just got in from unloading & stacking a load of hay, breaking 3"-4" of water tub ice, & refilling with warm water (which the hooved gang thankfully sucked down & which we refilled), all during gusty winds & strong snow squalls. What fun! And the worst hasn't even really begun yet.

This winter thus far has been mildish here, with several hard-freeze periods. Today, 58 degrees (!), but expecting snow, ice, and sub-freezing high temps for the next week. I have cover crops to work in, and it looks like that'll have to wait. My target planting date for snap peas and spinach is delayed. I'm getting stir-crazy. Send cognac to: Wheelgarden, c/o The Funny Farm, NW GA.

And so it begins....15 mph gusts are hitting the house and it is snowing sideways.
It's really creepy. We were sitting quietly watching TV when the first gust hit. Our house is only 14 years old so it is well insulated and has Anderson windows but still it creaks when hit by a big gust of wind and these are just baby gusts compared to what they are predicting.
I wonder what we will wake up to?

Will be thinking of you North easterners tonight, as the wild winds hit your battened down hatches. May the chickens and horses and all the other critters ride it through as well as you!

It wasn't too bad while I was out in it today - snowed a little, but not much. After about 7:30 this evening, the snow came, and we got about 2", so still not too bad. I put some heaters in my rosemary cover, and greens cover - 200w and 750w, as it is supposed to get down to 2º Sun. night! And already I hear the winds - up to 50-60 MPH gusts in the forecast! I'm definitely glad this didn't come today!

Spent the afternoon at Los Angeles arboretum, first time I've been there, very nice. Lots of valentine's day couples picnicking on the grass. Quite hot though 88F and really intense sun, quite glad to get home to what seemed much more mild temps.

Oh, dear, more snow last night...4" more but too cold to go outside. Boys, am I getting old! ...normally I'd be out there shoveling myself but I think I am calling someone with a snowblower. Maybe more snow Tuesday night but at least schools are out for their winter recess....yay!
It could have been worse.

Apart from the sun shining, it is absolutely AWFUL here this morning. (And I haven't even been outside yet.) Husband took the dogs out for their morning business walk, but very little "business" was done. All they wanted to do was hightail it back to the house (husband included). Our poor old Walker Coonhound was shivering for 15 minutes afterwards, & is now snoozing on a couple of old down pillows on the floor of our tiny upstairs bathroom since it's the warmest room in the house.
And true to form for me during periods of unpleasant weather, I took a nice flop on the frozen ground late Friday night & for some bizarre reason felt just fine yesterday but woke up this morning like a complete cripple. I'm walking around like Quasimodo. Geesh. Guess it's going to be a serious Advil day here today. That or an early Happy Hour. . . .

Breezy, don't you have some of those things that fit on your shoes like cleats? If not, you need to get some so you don't fall!
The next 7 days are up/down ones....one day into the 60's and the next only the upper 40's...nights in the upper 30's and then down into the mid 20's! Just drives you nuts.
