In my perennial bed clean ups yesterday I noticed hostas are poking through already. It's way too early, usually isn't until the end of April/early May. This means they will start looking ragged earlier in the season. Found daffodils under all the leaf cover, as well as catmint, bleeding heart, obedience plant, just about everything is popping up! Looks like all the garlic is up.

Not much happening so far. A little asparagus and the garlic so far. Garden is waiting for electric wire, but rain got in the way.

I believe this is a painted daisy...it blooms pink...I rarely see the bloom...the deer love it. I do like the foliage.

Meadow rue is doing well. I'll need to start removing some of the protective cages.

This isn't in my yard, it's in my CG and it's my first time successfully growing sweet peas. This is my first bloom that I discovered yesterday and I forgot to post this pic. It smelled so pretty.

what do you use meadow rue for? I don't use it for anything...I purchased it because I liked the foliage...and then I got this head high plant with delicate flowers.

After picking and drying some this spring, I let the oregano grow and flower... There's a lot of it...
It is just a magnet for what seems to be every bee and wasp type in the neighborhood... I tried to do a count of all of them as they were feeding...but there were so many coming and going...it was hard... By estimate though there are easily well over a hundred of them out there on the flowers at any given time during the day...I'm sure way more... The word is out... It's wonderful to watch...
I had to tie the oregano back to the fence some as it was blocking a pathway in the garden... I just moved gently as I did my work...trying my best not to disturb them... Some of the bees were less happy than others that I was 'in their space'... I have some cicada killers that hang out at my place...got dive-bombed by them a couple times...They were just letting me know they were still in charge... I have always felt that my bees know me...I think I read that somewhere too...about bees recognizing us... We co-exist well here...
Too bad I don't have the picture thing going...

As of yesterday, there are 10 fewer 'bad bugs' in the yard...Well probably more but mosquitoes don't count... ;)
'Eliminated' six young harlequin bugs from the dill heads of all places???...Not thrilled about them in the garden...They decimated my horseradish a couple years ago...Haven't seen their eggs though...
Saw some caterpillar evidence on one of the tomatoes and miraculously found the small green culprit...
Saw what was obvious fresh chewing on two sunflower leaves and got the two caterpillars there...
And with a quick smack, took out a young grasshopper... :(
~~~
I have noticed for the past several years, that my hibiscus acts as a host plant for fleas beetles... They do not do very much damage at all to the majority of all the leaves...just some hole chewing to the very lowest immature leaves... You can't even see that damage... They just seem to like to 'hang out' on that plant... So every time I go out back there with Summer, I do a beetle check... Since I've been on patrol, their recurring numbers are much lower... Hoping they stay on the hibiscus and that they don't all find the eggplant over in the veggie garden...
~~~
On a positive note, I saw a Praying Mantis on the big witches broom at the driveway... Held my hand out to him...he walked right up and stopped... We had a small conversation then I walked him back to his new home amongst the cosmos in my veggie garden... ;) There's lots to eat back there...

I was out back with Summer earlier...Suddenly I heard this distressed insect type sound... A catbird, I have lots here, landed quite nearby on a bamboo trellis, and had in its mouth a big cicada...squirming and carrying on...it was loud... This went on for quite a few seconds before the catbird released his prey and flew off up to the corner of the garage... I felt sorry for the cicada but it was cool to see real nature stuff so up close...

I felt sorry for the cicada I am like that too. I hate to see anything die. It's why I can't enjoy fishing.
