When my chickens aren't old enough to lay much their first year (heritage breeds can take six months to start laying), I find they lay well through their fourth year. Some older chickens rarely lay, others may go from 6 eggs a week to 4 eggs. It is very much an individual thing. I have a few hens that have permanent amnesty. When the others are obviously not producing, they go to make somebody in need a good dinner.

Neighbor to the north texted me, asking if we needed eggs. I was surprised that his girls were laying so early. He even delivers them to us…won’t take any payment for them. The eggs are nice size, in shades of tan/brown and blue/green.

We adopted some from a neighbor that passed away. 2 Guinea's, a miniature rooster and 6 hens. We already had 6 hens, 3 that are pretty old and don't lay anymore. We are starting to get eggs here too.

Went out to feed, water and egg gather. Noticed my elderly speckled Sussex was not walking around. Gave her a sip of water and took her inside. Examination showed blood on her leg. Closer look showed her leg tag, which looks like a very small slinky, had a very pointy end which pierced her leg, wound around it and then exited. Got the wire cutters and removed it a bit at a time. Washed, put on betadine and neosporin and put her to rest in a box with food and water. Checked tonight and she didn't make it. So sad. Now I need to remove the tags from all the other chickens and find another way to differentiate between them.

gardendmpls, I’ve been considering colored zip ties to help differentiate their ages.

I’ve been considering colored zip ties Thinking the same thing. If each was a different variety, I could just look on my list, but some are indistinguishable. Maybe I should just take mug shots.

Different colored nail color for their toes? Grandkids would enjoy helping

Now I need to remove the tags from all the other chickens and find another way to differentiate between them. Are these hatchery tags that they've had on since they were chicks? Because all the hatcheries I've come across specifically tell you to remove all leg tags after a short period of time to avoid this problem.

Are these hatchery tags that they've had on since they were chicks? No, the few (in the form of rubber bands) were removed. Theses were put on when the chickens were fully grown. Never saw anything like this, and will remove them so it won't happen again.

Different colored nail color for their toes Cute idea, but not very practical for over thirty chickens, especially trying to get them to hold still under the nail dryer. It would have to be redone regularly, plus finding those cheap (cheep?) shoes to wear until they get home.

Picked up 6 chicks this morning and we’ll be getting four more next week. Today chicks will lay brown eggs and the next ones are supposed to lay green eggs. I’m kind of excited……
