Some of these people have their heads stuck so far in the sand that they'll never acknowledge the real threat. But they're not the only ones. The sad aspect though is that deterioration will continue to the point that it's harder and harder to reverse the damage.
I was watching a science program earlier this week and can't remember now which program it was or what the topic was, but it addressed decline of civilizations. I happened to think of the fiascos on the political front, especially a specific party, and couldn't help wondering if some of these actions herald or suggest evidence of a decline in the US, heralded by a decline at the governing level.
It probably seems far fetched to think of America declining as a/the major global power (and I'm not saying that I agree with those who see America in that light), but I recall from history courses that most civilizations have their ebbs and falls, and once past greatness, rarely return to that same status. When I see the political fiascos, I wonder if we're on that slippery slope already.
