I like to eat shaves raw fennel quite a bit in salads. It's very expensive to buy here at farmers markets. I wonder why?

I grew it once and it was very easy to grow but we did not use enough of it to make it worthwhile growing so I never grew it again. It can cross pollinate with dill and affect the taste of the seeds and I usually grow lots of dill so I don't take the chance br growing something that we really don't care about.
I had used the bulb to cook with when I grew it. I rember that the roots really went deep and broke off when I pulled the bulbs.

I have never had any but I am not a fan of anise flavoring. My sister uses it in salad I think. I wonder how long I can leave it in the ground or if I pick it how long it lasts. I grew it for her and she is away until July 2. If it last that long I am sure she would use it for July 4th weekend. My BIL has difficulty tasting anything but he can taste this.

Just read an article about fennel being one of the next "Super Foods" and how to incorporate it into a traditional Thanksgiving feast. Sliced fennel added to a stuffing or risotto. Shaved into a vegetable salad or grilled chunks alongside a roasted turkey. I know it pairs well with apple and onions. According to the article the nutrients in fennel are heart healthy and beneficial to the immune system. Sign me up. Was gifted with several starts about a week ago. Need to look up more uses.

I grew one fennel plant as a test this past season. It's still looking good out there, even with our first steady nights of frost having arrived.
It's definitely on my grow list for next year

Need to look up more uses.
A standard fennel recipe for me is braised fennel which works really nicely as a main vegetable dish. The recipe I use is from Deborah Madison's "Vegetarian cooking for everyone" I can't find a link for that one I'm afraid but this one from Jamie Oliver's site is quite similar
www.jamieoliver.com/recipes/member-recipes/recipe-detail/4061/
If you have Deborah's book I'd go with that, hers starts with a mire a pois of onions carrots and celery which then surround the fennel as its braising otherwise its very similar to the above link. Its really nice you get the slight caramelisation of the split fennel bulbs and it tempers the fennel flavour a little but you get the freshness if you save the leaf part, shred then add to at the last minute to the white wine butter sauce you've created. Its yummy.
I actually made it for an annual Thanksgiving dinner we usually get invited to and got sick of the candied yams with marshmallows which seems is the favourite option to bring, sweet upon sweet, upon sweet.

I also use the seeds- ground- after I sauté onions in olive oil, then add kale or chard.
I often times make an appetizer out of this, placing it on grilled crusty garlic bread (made with olive oil and garlic)

marinated and grilled
on shish kabobs
par cooked and cut into cubes for dipping
one of the Italian food channel cooks uses it like celery

I guess its been superseded by a newer edition. I'd thoroughly recommend it, its very good and gives a nice few recipes for any vegetable you care to mention and also gives general guidelines which I like.
I've bought about 4 copies of this over the years either to give to someone or keep at other locations where I might spend some time. I even have a copy I use regularly which is spattered with stuff and sun bleached and a nicer copy on a main bookshelf. That's how much I like this book and have never gone quite so berserk over another.
Anyway suffice it to say I'd recommend and at that price get a few.
I guess now I'll have to get a copy of the new version
