I know. For the longest time I thought that too (multiply by 7) Nor is the 7 factor for dogs. I don't know how we all got to this belief.

desertwoman That's a fantastic recipe. I think that if we keep the cat she'll be fed that food, and that food only. I suspect it would be very good food for me as well. ;) I may live to the ripe old age of 78 (15 cat years). We still need to talk with the neighbor, and see what she'd like to do. If she is willing to part with the cat, we are going to do more or less what brownrexx did. Thank you all for the great suggestions.

I have 6 outdoor cats...3 males & 3 females that I had all of them fixed. It cost less than $100 ea. and that included their pain meds and a rabies shot...required by law in our state....and they are yearly here unless you request & pay more for the 3 yr. rabies shot. Also, anyone who may need an animal spayed or neutered....if you live close to a college or university that has a vet school...check it out. I've been told I could have gotten mine done at Uof Fl. Vet school for about $25 each! We used to use the vet school at Uof Ill. when we lived up there...for our large animals....WAY cheaper....larger animals were cattle & horses.
I don't use frontline on mine but I use a similar product that is MUCH cheaper and works just as well. I get it either at Walmart (often out there and NOT the cheapest thing they carry) or at TSC. I also make sure that the product I'm buying will kill ticks too. Our cats roam so they often pick up ticks out here in the woods.
I used to use Brewer's Yeast in pet foods to help prevent fleas. I quit once I started using the monthly treatments. I got it in the vitamin dept. at Walmart. Also, any kind of bedding...if it has some cedar chips in it or under it...that will help deter the fleas too.

A bath and a flea comb will go a long way toward getting rid of fleas. Use a flea comb on the dry cat. There is something called a flea dip that you can use, but I never used it. My cats are indoors only and have never had fleas, except for when we brought them home from the shelter as kittens. A flea comb was used to rid them of fleas. We combed them twice per day and kept soapy water near by in which to drown the fleas as we picked them off. A bath would have helped as well, but our kittens were very sick with upper respiratory infections when we brought them home and the vet recommended against a bath until they were feeling better.
I had a dog growing up and we gave him a pill once per month as a flea treatment.

Thank you DW. Our cat has become very picky. We have been spending a fortune of foods that he ends up refusing. I will try this.

Reflecting further on this topic, I must modify my response, with heartfelt emotions, and say...get a DOG!

Our cat has become very picky Tell me about it...Kitty's food dish is a blue speckled metal cereal bowl from our camping days. When the level of food gets too low, as in half empty, she starts sending us "messages" that something is not as she wants it. I think that the problem is that she has to put her face into the bowl and it bothers her whiskers. So, I traded her bowl for one that is wide open and shouldn't bother her whiskers. She won't eat out of it. Next, I put her food back into the blue metal bowl and set that into the white wide bowl and she likes that....until it's not full enough again. So I dumped her food from the blue bowl into the white bowl and now she is happy >:(

Aren't animals funny? They get into such routines and let you know if you miss a beat!

Everything has a process after all! My kitty is very similar...anytime I change the slightest thing she tells me about it and we have to have a discussion about it!

I had a cat once who would come tell me if her litter box wasn't cleaned to her specs.

Latitude33 : were you referring to me? I do not think I am a dog person. I never had a dog. I like them but I never actually considered getting one. I must have a reason to get a dog. I believe that dogs need to work, like men, and so far I never had a job suitable for a dog. I might, some day.

Part of their job is companionship and they can be very good at listening. (

octave1, No, I was just speaking in general. Hazel, my dog, we truly have an emotional bond. The cats, Eeyore and Clarabelle, treat me as if I am their staff.

The cats, Eeyore and Clarabelle, treat me as if I am their staff. Wait until they get really old. They will forget all about that.
